LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is a magnetic tape data storage technology developed as an open standards format. The management of licensing and certification of media and mechanism manufacturers, and development of the format is handled by the LTO consortium, initially made up of Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Seagate.
LTO Ultrium has consistently been the best-selling super tape format, and is the main backup tape for small to large businesses.
The original version (now referred to as LTO-1) could hold 100 GB of data in a cartridge. The current version (LTO-6), released in 2012, can hold 2.5 TB in a cartridge of the same size.
